Materials
Material Selection
Look one up, compare two head to head, or sort every family by the property that governs your part.
Acrylic (ACM)
Hot petroleum oil above nitrile's ceiling, well below FKM's price.
AFLAS (FEPM)
Steam, bases and amines. Contains fluorine, and what that now means.
Butadiene (BR)
Abrasion and cold flexibility. Almost always blended, rarely alone.
Butyl (IIR)
The lowest gas permeability of any elastomer, and real damping.
CPE (CM)
Heat, ozone and flame resistance at a working price. The usual CSM substitute.
EPDM
Weather, ozone, steam and hot water. The outdoor and potable-water family.
Epichlorohydrin (CO/ECO)
Fuel resistance with butyl-class permeability and cold flexibility.
Fluorocarbon (FKM)
Heat, fuels and aggressive chemicals. The premium sealing default.
Polynorbornene (PNR)
The softest usable elastomer, and a damper rather than a spring.
Fluorosilicone (FVMQ)
Fuel resistance across silicone's temperature range. Aerospace's answer.
Hydrogenated Nitrile (HNBR)
Steam, heat and oil with no fluorine — the leading PFAS-free alternative.
Hypalon (CSM)
Oxidising acids, UV and colour stability. Supply is narrower than it was.
Liquid Silicone (LSR)
Silicone injection-moulded to tight tolerance. Small, complex, high volume.
Natural Rubber (NR)
The best dynamic elastomer there is, and useless outdoors or near oil.
Neoprene (CR)
The balanced all-rounder. Wins nothing, rarely fails badly.
Nitrile (NBR)
The standard oil-resistant rubber, and the default for fuel and oil seals.
SBR (Buna S)
The commodity workhorse. Abrasion and water, at the lowest cost we mix.
Silicone (HCR, VMQ)
The widest temperature range we mould, and mechanically the weakest.
Urethane (AU/EU)
Abrasion and load capacity beyond any conventional rubber.
HNBR vs FKM
Where the price of a fluoroelastomer stops being worth it.
Viton vs Buna
The most common sealing question, and usually the wrong framing.
AFLAS vs FKM
Two fluoroelastomers that fail in opposite places.
