Ask Dr. Stretch
| | Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) | Q: What is the difference between Urethane and Silicone other than Urethane being a cheaper alternative?
A: Urethane "rubber" is more commonly referred to as "Urethane Elastomer", because it's not rubber (not even synthetic rubber). It is a flexible plastic material that has some of the characteristics of rubber, and is much cheaper than Silicone rubber. However, it is not as long lasting as Silicone, and usually requires the application of a release agent before every casting is made. Release agents usually have to be cleaned off of the part before painting it, which is extra work. It is more suitable for making very large molds (and it's cheaper price helps here as well), and has higher tear strength than Silicone (particularly helpful when making "glove" molds).
