Corry Rubber in the News
Chemlok Aqueous Meets Performace Needs of Component Manufacturer
For many companies that use rubber-to-metal adhesives, converting to aqueous systems may seem a bit daunting. But to Ernie Ferro, president of Corry Rubber Corporation, the choice was simple.
"About six years ago, we were using a considerable amount of Chemlok solvent based adhesives each year," Ferro remembers. "We made an internal decision to lower our VOC emissions and reduce health and fire hazards in the plant. Chemlok aqueous adhesives fit that bill."
Founded in 1961, Corry Rubber is a family owned business that produces a variety of rubber-bonded parts at its Corry, Pennsylvania plant. Because the company's primary products are suspension components for automobiles, an effective rubber-to-metal adhesive is critical. The system of choice is a general-purpose, one-coat water based adhesive that bonds an arry of vulcanized and unvulcanized materials to metal.
"We evaluated a number of aqueous materials, and we found that Chemlok aqueous adhesives were better for the environment and easier to use, "Ferro says. "We've also been extremely satisfied with the performance of Chemlok aqueous adhesives. We're completely sold on the technololy."
Since switching to Chemlok aqueous adhesives, Corry Rubber has virtually eliminated its use of solvent-based adhesives. The company's application of Chemlok aqueous adhesives, on the other hand, is now more than double the amount of solvent-based adhesives previously used. Ferro also says that his rubber-to-metal business has increased by a factor of four since converting to Chemlok aqueous adhesives.
Ferro is so confident in Chemlok aqueous adhesives that he urges customers to use them - even if they first request solvent-based systems.
"Recently, we quoted on some new businesss and the customer asked what type of adhesive we used. When I told him aqueous adhesives, he was a little hesitant because he didn't have much experience with them. Neverthelesss, he let us use Chemlok aqueous adhesives and we've encountered no problems yet." And for those who question the cost-effectiveness of aqueous systems, Ferro offers a quick retort.
"To convert to Chemlok aqueous adhesives, we bought a Binks chain on edge spray booth, HVLP guns and a heated air unit. This required some up-front investment but since switching to Chemlok aqueous adhesives, we've reduced our dollar outlay in adhesives by 50 percent. The savings in materials we've experienced has paid for the equipment and our investment; even though aqueous adhesives are slightly more expensive that solvent-based systems."
Despite the savings and other benefits, the one thing that keeps Ferro specifying Chemlok aqueous adhesives is performance. "The performance of these products has been well above our expectations and our customers. Plus, the support from Lord Corporation is outstanding."
"In this day and age, if you're in rubber-to-metal bonding the very least you should do is investigate Chemlok aqueous adhesives. Then, determine if they meet your needs, as they have ours."
